Pitstop Poetry, 2026
Being a truck driver is considered one of the toughest professions. Yet there is little respect for this group, both on the road and in society, even though almost everyone depends on them every day. Their position is under pressure due to a shortage of parking spaces, an ageing workforce and staff shortages, while the stereotype of the typical truck driver persists.
Through her research, Femke Hoppenbrouwer discovered a very poetic side to the profession, found among other things in the personal slogans displayed on trucks. These serve as a form of self-empowerment or a peptalk, some truckers describe it.
With Pitstop Poetry, Hoppenbrouwer brings drivers together to develop their slogans and wisdom into poetry, written and performed by the drivers themselves, providing them a stage.
This creates a form of “mental loading and unloading”: a way to put thoughts from the road onto paper and share them with each other and the world. Their work is awarded the Pitstop Poetry Prize 2026: a shared trophy and crowning achievement.
